The Blessed Lord said: Renunciation and the yoga of action both lead to the highest good. But of the two, the yoga of action is superior to the renunciation of action.
Context and commentary on verse 5.2
Krishna’s answer comes in two steps. First he grants that both paths lead to freedom. Then, as Arjuna asked, he picks one: the yoga of action.
For Shankara both lead to liberation by helping knowledge to arise. The yoga of action is called higher here only in comparison with a ‘mere’ giving up of action, without knowledge. Renunciation joined with knowledge has a different place, as he makes clear in the verses that follow.
Sridhara Swami sees it as a matter of stages. For Arjuna, grieving because he takes the body to be himself, the yoga of action. Once that has purified the mind and knowledge has arisen, renunciation to ripen it. So the two are steps, one after the other.
For Ramanuja renunciation means the yoga of knowledge. Both lead independently to seeing the self, but even for one capable of the path of knowledge, the yoga of action is better. Madhva stresses that the renunciation here is not the formal order of sannyasa. The fourth ashrama has its own place, but what is being compared here is the inner giving up within action; that is his position.

‘Both are good, but for you, this one’ is an honest kind of answer. It does not belittle the other road, and it does not leave the one who asked in confusion.
The wish to run away from work often dresses itself as detachment. Staying inside the work and learning to let go of its grip can seem harder. But for most of us it is the safer road.
