ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ || 15 ||

- ವಿಭುಃ (विभुः, vibhuḥ) = ಸರ್ವವ್ಯಾಪಿ (the all-pervading one)
- ಕಸ್ಯಚಿತ್ ಪಾಪಮ್ ನ ಆದತ್ತೇ (कस्यचित् पापम् न आदत्ते, kasyacit pāpam na ādatte) = ಯಾರ ಪಾಪವನ್ನೂ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (does not take on anyone’s sin)

- ಅಜ್ಞಾನೇನ ಆವೃತಮ್ ಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ (अज्ञानेन आवृतम् ज्ञानम्, ajñānena āvṛtam jñānam) = ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಹೋಗಿದೆ (knowledge is veiled by ignorance)
- ತೇನ ಮುಹ್ಯಂತಿ ಜಂತವಃ (तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः, tena muhyanti jantavaḥ) = ಅದರಿಂದ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಮೋಹಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತವೆ (by that beings are deluded)
The all-pervading one takes on neither anyone’s sin nor anyone’s merit. Knowledge is veiled by ignorance, and by that beings are deluded.
Context and commentary on verse 5.15
As in the last verse, there is a question here of who the ‘all-pervading one’ is. But the second line applies to all readings alike: the root of confusion is ignorance, which covers knowledge the way a cloud covers the sun.
Shankara raises a natural question. If the all-pervading one accepts neither the sin of the devotee nor the merit devotees offer, why do people perform worship, sacrifice and charity? Because discernment is veiled by ignorance. So people live in the delusion ‘I do, I make others do, I enjoy’.
For Ramanuja ‘vibhu’ means the self, which is not confined to any one body. It does not remove the sorrow of those close to it, nor take away the happiness of those hostile to it. ‘Mine’ and ‘other’ are all the work of latent impressions. The cause is that past karma has contracted knowledge, and so the fourth chapter’s ‘boat of knowledge’ and ‘fire of knowledge’ meet here.
For Sridhara Swami the all-pervading one is God, perfectly full, with no desire of his own. If he seems to show grace to devotees and restraint to others, it is not partiality. Punishment too is a form of grace; it is because the knowledge that he is equal to all is veiled that people see him as unequal. Our source text has no comment by Madhva on this verse.

For life today
Deep down, all of us hope that someone will carry our mistakes and someone will reward our good deeds. This verse gently sets that hope aside.
It is true in health too. A vow, a mantra or a prayer can give the mind strength. But they do not replace the medicine that has to be taken or the habit that has to be changed. Even for those who believe in God, that work remains ours.
