Context and commentary on verse 8.23
Here begins the most discussed part of the chapter: the time of death and the two paths that follow. But the acharyas do not take the word ‘kala’, time, only as a date in the almanac.
Ramanuja says it directly: here ‘time’ means the path. Because most of the presiding deities along that path are those of the day, the fortnight, the month and the year, the path is called ‘time’. Madhva too sees here the presiding deities of time and the rest, and says that the word ‘time’ also stands for fire and the others named next.
Shankara includes the performers of ritual action within the word ‘yoginah’, on the strength of the third chapter’s ‘karmayogena yoginam’ (3.3). Those who do not return are the yogis; those who return are the performers of ritual.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

The saying ‘it is good to go in uttarayana’ is very common among us. Everyone knows the story of Bhishma waiting on his bed of arrows for the northern course of the sun.
But in which month, at what hour, death comes is in no one’s hands. Remembering that the acharyas themselves read ‘time’ here as a path may comfort families who lost a loved one in dakshinayana or at night. There is more on this on the next verse’s page.
