Context and commentary on verse 10.4
This verse and the next together list twenty states. The next verse closes by saying they all come ‘from me alone’. Sridhara Swami reads this as the explanation of the word ‘lokamaheshvara’ in the previous verse. The list holds pleasant states and unpleasant ones alike: sorrow beside joy, fear beside fearlessness.
Some of Shankara’s definitions are memorable. ‘Buddhi’ is the mind’s power to grasp subtle matters. ‘Asammoha’ is acting with discernment in whatever comes up. ‘Kshama’ is the mind staying unmoved even when abused or struck. ‘Satya’ is speech that carries what one has seen and heard to another’s understanding just as it is. ‘Dama’ is the calming of the outer senses, ‘shama’ the calming of the inner mind.
Ramanuja adds a word to ‘satya’: speech that tells what was seen and is for the good of beings. His example for ‘asammoha’ is the ending of the illusion that takes mother-of-pearl for silver. For Madhva ‘buddhi’ is deciding what should and should not be done, and ‘shama’, as the Bhagavata says, is the understanding settled in the Lord.

For life today
Looking at this list, a question arises: do sorrow and fear also come from him? In the Gita’s view no part of life lies outside him.
Medicine does not see fear as an enemy. Fear in the right measure protects us from danger, and only excessive anxiety calls for treatment. If anxiety is great enough to get in the way of daily life, it is wise to see a doctor.
