ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ: ಐತರೇಯ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನ ಮಹಾವಾಕ್ಯ

ನಾಲ್ಕು ವೇದಗಳಿಂದ ಆಯ್ದ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಹಾವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ವೇದಾಂತ ಪರಂಪರೆ ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಋಗ್ವೇದದ ಐತರೇಯ ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿನದ್ದು ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಎಂಬ ಈ ವಾಕ್ಯ.

ಎರಡೇ ಪದಗಳ ಈ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಾಕ್ಯ, ನಮ್ಮೊಳಗಿನ ಅರಿವೇ ಪರಮ ಸತ್ಯ ಎಂಬ ಆಳವಾದ ಸಂಗತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ॥

ಪ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಮ್ (प्रज्ञानम्, prajñānam) = ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆ, ಒಳಗಿನ ಅರಿವು (consciousness, inner awareness)
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ (ब्रह्म, brahma) = ಪರಮ ಸತ್ಯ, ಬ್ರಹ್ಮವು (Brahman, the ultimate reality)

This statement from the Aitareya Upanishad is counted among the four principal mahavakyas of Adi Shankaracharya’s Advaita Vedanta.

ನೋಡುವ, ಕೇಳುವ, ಅರಿಯುವ ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಕ್ರಿಯೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದಿರುವ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯೇ ಬೇರೆಯಲ್ಲ, ಅದೇ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಎಂಬುದು ಇದರ ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ.

The import of this statement is that the very consciousness behind seeing, hearing and knowing is not separate from Brahman, it is Brahman itself.
