ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ತೇಷಾಮೇವಾನುಕಂಪಾರ್ಥಮಹಮಜ್ಞಾನಜಂ ತಮಃ।
ನಾಶಯಾಮ್ಯಾತ್ಮಭಾವಸ್ಥೋ ಜ್ಞಾನದೀಪೇನ ಭಾಸ್ವತಾ ॥ 11 ॥

तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः।
नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता ॥ 11 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತೇಷಾಮ್ ಏವ ಅನುಕಂಪಾರ್ಥಮ್ (तेषाम् एव अनुकम्पार्थम्, teṣām eva anukampārtham) = ಅವರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕರುಣೆಯಿಂದಲೇ (out of compassion for them alone)
- ಅಹಮ್ ಆತ್ಮಭಾವಸ್ಥಃ (अहम् आत्मभावस्थः, aham ātmabhāvasthaḥ) = ನಾನು ಅವರ ಅಂತರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ (I, dwelling within their hearts)
- ಭಾಸ್ವತಾ ಜ್ಞಾನದೀಪೇನ (भास्वता ज्ञानदीपेन, bhāsvatā jñānadīpena) = ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ದೀಪದಿಂದ (with the shining lamp of knowledge)
- ಅಜ್ಞಾನಜಂ ತಮಃ ನಾಶಯಾಮಿ (अज्ञानजं तमः नाशयामि, ajñānajaṃ tamaḥ nāśayāmi) = ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ (destroy the darkness born of ignorance)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅವರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಕರುಣೆಯಿಂದಲೇ ನಾನು ಅವರ ಅಂತರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ, ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ದೀಪದಿಂದ ಅಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯನ್ನು ನಾಶಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Out of compassion for them alone, I, dwelling within their hearts, destroy the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ದೀಪದ ಉಪಮೆಯನ್ನು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ಬೆಳೆಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ವಿವೇಕವೇ ದೀಪ. ಭಕ್ತಿಯ ಪ್ರಸಾದವೇ ಅದರ ಎಣ್ಣೆ. ಅವನ ಧ್ಯಾನದಲ್ಲಿನ ತನ್ಮಯತೆಯೇ ಅದನ್ನು ಉರಿಸುವ ಗಾಳಿ. ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಚರ್ಯ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಸಾಧನೆಗಳಿಂದ ಹದವಾದ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯೇ ಬತ್ತಿ. ವೈರಾಗ್ಯದ ಅಂತಃಕರಣವೇ ಹಣತೆ. ರಾಗದ್ವೇಷಗಳ ಕಲಕಿಲ್ಲದ ಮನಸ್ಸೇ ಗಾಳಿ ಬೀಸದ ಕೋಣೆ. ನಿರಂತರ ಏಕಾಗ್ರ ಧ್ಯಾನದಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ದರ್ಶನವೇ ಅದರ ಹೊಳಪು.
Shankara develops this image of the lamp at great length. Discernment is the lamp. The grace of devotion is its oil. Absorption in meditation on him is the breeze that fans it. Understanding refined by disciplines such as brahmacharya is the wick. A mind of dispassion is the bowl. A mind unclouded by attachment and aversion is the windless room. Right vision born of constant one-pointed meditation is its brightness.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಆತ್ಮಭಾವಸ್ಥ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಭಕ್ತನ ಮನೋವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ನೆಲೆಸಿ ತನ್ನ ಕಲ್ಯಾಣಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ತೋರುವುದು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ‘ಕತ್ತಲೆ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಕರ್ಮದಿಂದ ಬಂದ, ಅವನಲ್ಲದ ವಿಷಯಗಳತ್ತ ಮನಸ್ಸು ಜಾರುವ ಹಳೆಯ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅದು ಅವಿದ್ಯೆಯಿಂದ ಆದ ಸಂಸಾರ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
For Ramanuja ‘atmabhavastha’ means dwelling as the object in the devotee’s mind and revealing his auspicious qualities. For him the ‘darkness’ is the old habit, born of past karma, of the mind sliding towards things other than him. For Sridhara Swami it is samsara, made by ignorance. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಅನುಕಂಪಾರ್ಥಂ’, ಕರುಣೆಯಿಂದ. ಕತ್ತಲೆಯ ಕೋಣೆಗೆ ಒಂದು ದೀಪ ತಂದಾಗ ಕತ್ತಲೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಜಗಳವಾಡಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ, ಅದು ತಾನೇ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.
‘Anukampartham’, out of compassion. When a lamp is brought into a dark room, there is no need to fight the darkness: it simply goes.
ರೋಗದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ತಿಳಿವೂ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಭಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುವ ತಪ್ಪು ಕಲ್ಪನೆಗಳನ್ನು ವೈದ್ಯರ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟ, ಕರುಣೆಯ ವಿವರಣೆ ಕರಗಿಸಬಲ್ಲದು.
