Context and commentary on verse 10.29
Sridhara Swami gives another difference between serpents and nagas: Vasuki is king of the venomous ones, Ananta or Shesha king of those without venom. For Shankara Varuna is king of the water deities, Aryaman king of the ancestors. Here too Ramanuja makes the same grammatical note: Varuna is not one among the water beings but their lord.
‘Yamah samyamatam aham’. For Shankara ‘samyamatam’ means those who restrain, who hold things in order. In Ramanuja’s words, among those who punish he is Yama Vaivasvata. He is both the god of death and the judge of dharma. In the Katha Upanishad he is also the teacher who gives Nachiketas the knowledge of the Self. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Restraint too is his glory. A river with banks waters the fields, and when the banks break it becomes a flood.
Much of health rests on this restraint: limiting salt and sugar, staying away from alcohol and tobacco, sleeping at the right time. These small rules help keep serious illnesses away.
