Context and commentary on verse 11.4
Arjuna’s humility is notable here. He does not insist. He says, ‘if you think I am fit.’ Sridhara Swami unfolds it like this: you need not show it merely because I wish to see it, only if you judge me able. For Shankara ‘Yogeshvara’ means the lord of yogis.
For Ramanuja ‘yoga’ here means union with auspicious qualities such as knowledge. He points to ‘pashya me yogam aishvaram’ in the eighth verse as support. Madhva gives ‘prabhu’ the sense of ‘the one who is able’, and quotes the Mokshadharma: there is nothing higher than that eternal Person.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
It is not wrong to ask for what we want, but the manner of asking matters. Words such as ‘if possible’ and ‘if you think it right’ give respect to the other person.
When we go to an expert, asking ‘Do I need this?’ instead of insisting ‘Just do this test’ is Arjuna’s way.
