  • ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ ಕಾಯಂ ಪ್ರಣಿಧಾಯ ಪ್ರಣಮ್ಯ (तस्मात् कायं प्रणिधाय प्रणम्य, tasmāt kāyaṃ praṇidhāya praṇamya) = ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ದೇಹವನ್ನು ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಚಾಚಿ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ (therefore, laying my body down and bowing)
(I seek the grace of you, the Lord worthy of praise)

  • ಪ್ರಿಯಃ ಪ್ರಿಯಾಯಾಃ (प्रियः प्रियायाः, priyaḥ priyāyāḥ) = ಪ್ರಿಯನು ಪ್ರಿಯೆಯನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸುವಂತೆ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಿಯನಾದ ನೀನು ಪ್ರಿಯನಾದ ನನ್ನನ್ನು (as a lover with the beloved, or as you who are dear, with me who am dear)
(O God, you should bear with me)

Therefore, laying my body down and bowing, I seek the grace of you, the Lord worthy of praise. As a father bears with his son, a friend with a friend, a lover with his beloved, so, O God, you should bear with me. In Ramanuja’s division of the words the last phrase runs: you who are dear should bear with me who am dear.

Context and commentary on verse 11.44

A comparison with three relationships: father and son, friend and friend, lover and beloved. Shankara unfolds it directly: as a father forgives a son’s offence, a friend a friend’s, a lover the beloved’s. For him ‘pranidhaya kayam’ means lowering the body deeply, and for Sridhara Swami stretching it on the ground like a staff.

There is a fine difference here in how the words are divided. Shankara divides ‘priyayarhasi’ as ‘priyayah’, of the beloved. Ramanuja divides it as ‘priyaya’, to me who am dear: you, supremely compassionate and dear to me, should bear all the faults of me who am dear to you. Both readings are given here. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

In close relationships love is greater than the fault, and so forgiveness finds its way. Arjuna recalls those very three relationships as he asks for forgiveness.

Asking forgiveness and forgiving both lighten the mind. Resentment carried for years disturbs our peace.
