Context and commentary on verse 11.2
Shankara stresses the word ‘vistarashah’: I have heard it not in brief but in detail. Sridhara Swami recalls words such as ‘aham kritsnasya jagatah prabhavah pralayas tatha’ (7.6) here, and also gives the sense ‘I have heard it again and again’. For the address ‘kamalapatraksha’ he gives the sense of eyes that are serene and wide.
Ramanuja recalls chapters seven to ten together here. For him ‘imperishable greatness’ means that he is the master of all things sentient and insentient, that he surpasses all through auspicious qualities such as knowledge and strength, that he is the support of all, and that he alone sets going every activity, even one as small as the blink of an eye. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Arjuna says ‘I have heard’ here, and in the next verse ‘I wish to see’. Everyone who has studied medicine knows that a disease read about in a book and a disease seen in a patient are two different things.
Hearing is the first step. The longing to see in life what one has heard is the step after it.
