Context and commentary on verse 11.32

The answer to Arjuna’s question is a single word: ‘kalo ‘smi’, I am Time. The acharyas give this word three kinds of depth. For Shankara it is Time that brings about the waning of the worlds, grown mighty for that purpose. Ramanuja goes to the root of the word: ‘kalayati’, he counts, and so he is ‘kala’. His sense is: I am the one counting out the end of the lifespans of these kings, the sons of Dhritarashtra and the rest.

For Madhva the word ‘kala’ points to all the Lord’s attributes: the root ‘kal’ carries the senses of binding, cutting and knowing. He is the one who binds the world in bondage, who cuts that bondage, and who knows all. For him ‘pravriddha’ does not mean one who has grown, but one who is complete or beginningless, for the Bhagavata says he is neither born nor does he grow. On ‘even without you’ Sridhara Swami says: even if you do not kill them, they are already in the grip of me as Time, and their death is certain.

For life today

It is well known that in the twentieth century the scientist Oppenheimer, recalling the first atomic bomb test, quoted an English translation of this verse. When immense power comes into human hands, this verse also brings to mind the weight of responsibility for it.

Ramanuja’s sense, that Time is counting everyone’s lifespan, asks us a question: how are we spending these days that are being counted? Time cannot be stopped, but it can be made meaningful.
