Context and commentary on verse 11.46
Which is the ‘four-armed’ form that Arjuna asks for? Shankara calls it the form of the son of Vasudeva: withdraw the thousand-armed cosmic form now seen, and be in that form. Sridhara Swami stresses ‘just as seen before’.
Ramanuja gives the background for this in his comment on the fiftieth verse. According to the Vishnu Purana, when Krishna was born he appeared in the four-armed form with conch, discus and mace. When Vasudeva, fearing Kamsa, pleaded with him, he concealed two of the arms. The four-armed form is his own form, and that is why Arjuna says ‘that same four-armed form’. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

After seeing the vast, we need a familiar face. Medical experience says that for elderly people in hospital, the faces of family, familiar things, a clock and their spectacles help to reduce confusion.
It is the same with God. The idea of the infinite exceeds the mind, and a familiar image gives it a hand to hold.
