ಶ್ಲೋಕ 11.11ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 11.11

‘Vishvatomukha’ means one who has faces in every direction. Shankara gives the reason: since he is the Self of all beings, all faces are his. According to him a verb such as ‘he showed’ or ‘Arjuna saw’ is to be supplied to complete this sentence. ‘Ananta’ means one without end.

Ramanuja gives ‘deva’ the sense of the shining one, and says the next verse describes that very radiance. For him ‘ananta’ means one who, being the support of the whole world of the three times, cannot be bounded by space or time. Madhva takes ‘sarvashcharyamaya’ to mean one whose very nature is every wonder.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

Garlands of flowers, sandal paste and cloth are also the things of our own worship. The small flower we offer may be thought of as a single strand of the garland of this cosmic form.

‘ಎಲ್ಲೆಡೆ ಮುಖವುಳ್ಳವನು’ ಎಂಬ ಮಾತು ಎದುರಿಗೆ ಬರುವ ಪ್ರತಿ ಮುಖದಲ್ಲೂ ಅವನನ್ನು ಕಾಣುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತದೆ.

The phrase ‘one whose faces are everywhere’ invites the habit of seeing him in every face we meet.
