Context and commentary on verse 11.22

The word ‘ushmapah’, ‘those who drink the warmth’, is the curiosity of this verse. Shankara, Ramanuja and Sridhara Swami all take it to mean the ancestors. Ramanuja quotes the Taittiriya Brahmana: ‘ushmabhaga hi pitarah’, the ancestors are those whose share is the warmth. Sridhara Swami recalls a smriti verse: as long as the food is warm and those eating eat in silence, the ancestors partake.

Shankara gives an example for each group: among the gandharvas Haha and Huhu, among the yakshas Kubera, among the asuras Virochana, among the siddhas Kapila. Gods and asuras alike stand amazed in the same gaze. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

The old belief that warm food is the ancestors’ share brings a lovely thought. Sitting with the elders of the house and sharing a warm meal with them while they are still alive is also a great honour to them.

Elderly people eating cold food alone is good neither for their body nor their mind. Eating together usually improves both appetite and cheer.
