About this verse
This is mantra 14 of the third section of the second chapter of the Katha Upanishad. Some editions may count the verses differently. We keep the most widely printed number.
Some say the same mantra also appears in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. We have not confirmed that place here.
Sources: several. Where versions differ, we have noted it here.
For life today
A life without any desire is not within everyone’s reach. But we can look calmly, once, at which desire holds us. That look alone can loosen the grip a little.
The immortality here is a state of knowing, in the Upanishad’s sense. It is not a promise of health or long life. Prayer does not replace medical treatment.
