Context and commentary on verse 10.24
Brihaspati is the teacher of the gods and Indra’s priest. Shankara says that is why he is the chief. Skanda is the commander of the army of the gods, known among us also as Subrahmanya and Kartikeya. For Sridhara Swami ‘saras’ means bodies of still water, and among them the ocean is foremost.
Ramanuja had already cited this verse as an example in his comment on verse nineteen: the words ‘purodhasam cha mukhyam mam’ show that ‘pradhanya’ means excellence. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Three kinds of excellence in one verse: the teacher’s knowledge, the commander’s courage, the ocean’s depth and breadth. A little of all three in one person is balance itself.
The image of the ocean returns again and again in the Gita. In the second chapter the ocean that stays unmoved however many rivers flow in is the picture of the steady mind (2.70). Recalling that picture in stressful moments can calm the mind.
