ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಹತೋ ವಾ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ ಸ್ವರ್ಗಂ ಜಿತ್ವಾ ವಾ ಭೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ ಮಹೀಮ್।
ತಸ್ಮಾದುತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ ಕೌಂತೇಯ ಯುದ್ಧಾಯ ಕೃತನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ ॥ 37 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
हतो वा प्राप्स्यसि स्वर्गं जित्वा वा भोक्ष्यसे महीम्।
तस्मादुत्तिष्ठ कौन्तेय युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥ 37 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (English IAST)
hato vā prāpsyasi svargaṃ jitvā vā bhokṣyase mahīm|
tasmāduttiṣṭha kaunteya yuddhāya kṛtaniścayaḥ || 37 ||
ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಹತಃ (हतः, hataḥ) = ಕೊಲ್ಲಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರೆ (if slain)
- ವಾ (वा, vā) = ಅಥವಾ (or)
- ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಸ್ಯಸಿ (प्राप्स्यसि, prāpsyasi) = ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತೀಯೆ (you will attain)
- ಸ್ವರ್ಗಮ್ (स्वर्गम्, svargam) = ಸ್ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು (heaven)
- ಜಿತ್ವಾ (जित्वा, jitvā) = ಗೆದ್ದು (having conquered)
- ಭೋಕ್ಷ್ಯಸೇ (भोक्ष्यसे, bhokṣyase) = ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತೀಯೆ (you will enjoy)
- ಮಹೀಮ್ (महीम्, mahīm) = ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು (the earth)
- ತಸ್ಮಾತ್ (तस्मात्, tasmāt) = ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ (therefore)
- ಉತ್ತಿಷ್ಠ (उत्तिष्ठ, uttiṣṭha) = ಎದ್ದು ನಿಲ್ಲು (rise up)
- ಕೌಂತೇಯ (कौन्तेय, kaunteya) = ಓ ಕೌಂತೇಯ (O son of Kunti)
- ಯುದ್ಧಾಯ (युद्धाय, yuddhāya) = ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ (for battle)
- ಕೃತನಿಶ್ಚಯಃ (कृतनिश्चयः, kṛtaniścayaḥ) = ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡವನಾಗಿ (with your mind made up)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕೊಲ್ಲಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರೆ ಸ್ವರ್ಗವನ್ನು ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತೀಯೆ, ಗೆದ್ದರೆ ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತೀಯೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೌಂತೇಯ, ನಿಶ್ಚಯ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಯುದ್ಧಕ್ಕೆ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಲ್ಲು.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
If you are slain you will attain heaven, and if you win you will enjoy the earth. Therefore rise up, son of Kunti, with your mind made up for battle.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 2.37ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 2.37
ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆರನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಗೆ ನೇರ ಉತ್ತರ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅರ್ಜುನ ‘ನಾವು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೋ, ಅವರು ಗೆಲ್ಲುವುದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದೋ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ’ ಎಂದಿದ್ದ. ‘ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಲಾಭವೇ’ ಎಂದು ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಈ ಸಾಲನ್ನು ಸಂಕ್ಷಿಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರೂ ಇದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಉಭಯಥಾಪಿ ತವ ಲಾಭ ಏವ.
This verse answers the question Arjuna raised in verse 6: we do not know which is better, that we should win or that they should. Sridhara Swami puts the reply in a line, on either side the gain is yours. Shankaracharya says the same: ubhayathapi tava labha eva.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಇದನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಎತ್ತರಕ್ಕೆ ಒಯ್ಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಫಲದ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಧರ್ಮಯುದ್ಧ ಮೋಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೇ ದಾರಿಯಾಗುವುದರಿಂದ, ಸೋತರೂ ಗೆದ್ದರೂ ಸಿಗುವುದು ಪರಮ ಶ್ರೇಯಸ್ಸೇ ಎಂಬುದು ಅವರ ಓದು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನ ಬರೆದಿಲ್ಲ.
Ramanujacharya lifts it higher. Since a righteous war fought without any aim at its fruit is itself a means to the highest good, in defeat as in victory what is reached is that highest good. Madhvacharya does not comment on this verse.
ಈ ಮಾತು ಇನ್ನೂ ವೀರಸ್ವರ್ಗದ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಇದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬೇಕು. ಮೂವತ್ತೊಂಬತ್ತನೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕದಿಂದ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಈ ನೆಲೆಯನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಬೇರೆ ದಾರಿ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಇದನ್ನು ಗೀತೆಯ ಕೊನೆಯ ಮಾತು ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯುವುದು ಸರಿಯಲ್ಲ.
It is worth noticing that this is still the language of the warrior’s heaven. From verse 39 Krishna moves past this ground and points to another road, so this should not be taken as the Gita’s last word.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
‘ಸೋತರೆ ಏನು ಗತಿ’ ಎಂಬ ಭಯ ಹಲವು ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಹಾಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಎರಡೂ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಎದುರಿಸಬಹುದು ಎಂದು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡರೆ, ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಇಡುವುದು ಸುಲಭವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
The fear of what happens if I lose keeps many decisions tied up. But once we find that both outcomes can be met without disaster, taking the step becomes easier.
ದೊಡ್ಡ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಕುಳಿತಾಗ ಕೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದಾದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆ ಇದು: ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದು ಘಟಿಸಿದರೆ ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ತಾಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಲ್ಲೆನೇ? ಉತ್ತರ ಹೌದು ಎಂದಾದರೆ ಆ ನಿರ್ಧಾರ ಕಾಣುವಷ್ಟು ಭಯಂಕರವಾಗಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
Sitting before a large decision, this is a question worth asking: if the worse of the two happens, can I bear it? When the answer is yes, the decision is not as terrible as it looks.
