When the mind follows after the roaming senses, it carries away his wisdom as the wind carries a boat on the water.
Context and commentary on verse 2.67
Shankaracharya opens the image of the boat exactly: as the wind lifts a boat from the course it should take and drives it elsewhere. Sridhara Swami’s picture is sharper still: the wind spins the boat of a careless helmsman about the sea in every direction.
Another fine note of Sridhara Swami’s is worth marking. Among all the senses, it is enough for the mind to follow one, and that one carries the understanding away. What then, he asks, when it follows many.
Madhvacharya adds a further dimension: it obstructs the knowledge that is about to arise, and it also covers over the knowledge that has already arisen.

For life today
One small pull is enough. A person sitting down to write who glances at one message loses the next half hour somewhere else.
The beauty of this verse is that it does not blame the wind. Wind blows; that is its nature. Tying the boat, or holding the tiller, is our work. Leaving the phone in another room does more than willpower.
