Context and commentary on verse 2.61
The word mat-parah appears here for the first time in the Gita, and the acharyas read it from two directions.
For Shankaracharya it is a statement of non-difference: one should sit with the sense that I am Vasudeva, the inner self of all, he is my highest, and I am not other than he. For Ramanujacharya it is the door out of the circle of the previous verse: when the mind is set on Me, the auspicious refuge, it becomes pure; a pure mind brings the senses under control; and then the vision of the self becomes possible. He quotes the Vishnu Purana: as fire joined with wind burns the forest, so Vishnu seated in the mind burns away the sins of yogis.
Madhvacharya says it plainly: the senses are not unconquerable, they can be won by great effort, so the effort should be made. Sridhara Swami marks this as the answer to Arjuna’s question, how does he sit.

It is hard to leave a habit with a rule alone. Something larger than the rule is needed.
People who keep to a diet only for their own health tend to last less long than people who want to be there at a granddaughter’s wedding. That the mind needs something large to hold on to is what this verse points at.
