Context and commentary on verse 2.41
The plain statement here is that one who has a single aim has a single understanding, while one who has many wants has many. But the acharyas differ on where that singleness comes from.
For Shankaracharya it is the conviction born of a valid means of knowledge. That alone can cancel the branching contrary notions, and it is those branches that make worldly existence endless. For Ramanujacharya it comes from the singleness of the fruit: for one who seeks liberation every action is enjoined for that one fruit, so the purport of scripture is one and therefore the understanding is one.
Madhvacharya raises and answers another question. If there are many schools, in which does one place one’s trust? His answer is that views properly settled by sound reasoning turn out to be one.

For life today
The day of a person with one aim is simple. The day of a person with ten aims is full, and nothing moves forward.
The trouble with branches is not laziness. It is several good wants pulling in different directions. Deciding once what matters this week sends the rest back to their places.
