Context and commentary on verse 2.66

This is a chain of four negations, running in the direction opposite to the chain before it. Verses 62 and 63 gave the descent; this says what follows from not climbing those same steps.

Shankaracharya’s closing note is the pith of the verse. Happiness is the cessation of the senses’ thirst, not the getting of objects. So long as the thirst is there, he writes, not even a trace of happiness is possible.

Madhvacharya reads the word shanti as liberation itself, and cites a lexicon in support. For Ramanujacharya, one without peace is one in whom the longing for objects remains.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

Chasing happiness and having it are two different things. In the chase it is always a little further ahead.

Read backwards, the chain of this verse gives a plain piece of advice. Happiness needs peace, peace needs the practice of settling the mind, and that needs some hold on the senses. One cannot begin at the end.
