Context and commentary on verse 11.7

‘Yach chanyad drashtum icchasi’, whatever else you wish to see. What was that ‘whatever else’ in Arjuna’s mind? Shankara recalls his doubt from the second chapter: ‘yad va jayema yadi va no jayeyuh’ (2.6), whether we shall win or they will. The answer to that question of victory and defeat also appears here. From the twenty-sixth verse on, Arjuna sees it.

Sridhara Swami conveys the wonder of ‘here, in one place’ like this: the whole world, which one could not see though one wandered for millions of years, is seen now in this one body, as its limbs. Ramanuja takes ‘ekastha’ to mean standing in one part of the body: the whole world in one corner of his body. The ‘ekamshena’, ‘with one fraction’, at the end of the previous chapter becomes visible here. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today

Krishna knows even the unspoken question in Arjuna’s mind. A good listener hears the worry behind the words too.

A patient asks one question, but the real fear may be something else. The single question ‘Is there anything else you want to ask?’ opens the door to that fear.
