ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ತ್ವಮಕ್ಷರಂ ಪರಮಂ ವೇದಿತವ್ಯಂ ತ್ವಮಸ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಪರಂ ನಿಧಾನಮ್।
ತ್ವಮವ್ಯಯಃ ಶಾಶ್ವತಧರ್ಮಗೋಪ್ತಾ ಸನಾತನಸ್ತ್ವಂ ಪುರುಷೋ ಮತೋ ಮೇ ॥ 18 ॥

त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्।
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे ॥ 18 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ತ್ವಮ್ ಅಕ್ಷರಂ ಪರಮಂ ವೇದಿತವ್ಯಮ್ (त्वम् अक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यम्, tvam akṣaraṃ paramaṃ veditavyam) = ನೀನೇ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾದ ಪರಮ ಅಕ್ಷರ (you are the supreme imperishable, to be known)
- ತ್ವಮ್ ಅಸ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ವಸ್ಯ ಪರಂ ನಿಧಾನಮ್ (त्वम् अस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम्, tvam asya viśvasya paraṃ nidhānam) = ನೀನೇ ಈ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಪರಮ ಆಶ್ರಯ (you are the supreme resting place of this universe)
- ತ್ವಮ್ ಅವ್ಯಯಃ ಶಾಶ್ವತಧರ್ಮಗೋಪ್ತಾ (त्वम् अव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता, tvam avyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā) = ನೀನು ಅವ್ಯಯ, ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಧರ್ಮದ ರಕ್ಷಕ (you are changeless, the guardian of the eternal dharma)
- ತ್ವಂ ಸನಾತನಃ ಪುರುಷಃ ಮೇ ಮತಃ (त्वं सनातनः पुरुषः मे मतः, tvaṃ sanātanaḥ puruṣaḥ me mataḥ) = ನೀನೇ ಸನಾತನ ಪುರುಷ ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ (you are the eternal Person, I hold)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನೀನೇ ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾದ ಪರಮ ಅಕ್ಷರ. ನೀನೇ ಈ ವಿಶ್ವದ ಪರಮ ಆಶ್ರಯ. ನೀನು ಅವ್ಯಯ, ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಧರ್ಮದ ರಕ್ಷಕ. ನೀನೇ ಸನಾತನ ಪುರುಷ ಎಂದು ನಾನು ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತೇನೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
You are the supreme imperishable, the one to be known. You are the supreme resting place of this universe. You are changeless, the guardian of the eternal dharma. You are the eternal Person, I hold.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 11.18ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 11.18
ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಕಂಡದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅರ್ಜುನ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತತ್ತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಏರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ಅಕ್ಷರ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಕ್ಷಯವಿಲ್ಲದ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮ, ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಬಯಸುವವರು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕಾದದ್ದು. ‘ನಿಧಾನ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲವನ್ನೂ ಇಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಸ್ಥಾನ, ಅಂದರೆ ಪರಮ ಆಶ್ರಯ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ನಿನ್ನ ಐಶ್ವರ್ಯ ತರ್ಕಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಲುಕದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀನೇ ಪರಮ ಅಕ್ಷರ.
From what he sees with his eyes Arjuna rises here to principle. For Shankara ‘akshara’ is the imperishable supreme Brahman, which those seeking liberation must know. For him ‘nidhana’ is the place where all things are laid, that is, the supreme support. Sridhara Swami adds the reason: since your sovereignty is beyond reasoning, you alone are the supreme imperishable.
ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ‘ವೇದಿತವ್ಯ’ ಪದವನ್ನು ಉಪನಿಷತ್ತಿಗೆ ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ಮುಂಡಕದ ‘ದ್ವೇ ವಿದ್ಯೇ ವೇದಿತವ್ಯೇ’ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಮಾತುಗಳು ತಿಳಿಯಬೇಕೆಂದು ಹೇಳುವ ಪರಮ ಅಕ್ಷರ ನೀನೇ. ‘ಅವ್ಯಯ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸ್ವರೂಪ, ಗುಣ, ವೈಭವ ಯಾವುದರಲ್ಲೂ ಎಂದೂ ಕುಂದದವನು. ‘ಶಾಶ್ವತ ಧರ್ಮದ ರಕ್ಷಕ’ ಎಂದರೆ ಅವತಾರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ನಿತ್ಯವಾದ ವೈದಿಕ ಧರ್ಮವನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡುವವನು. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
Ramanuja links the word ‘to be known’ to the Upanishads: you are the supreme imperishable that words such as the Mundaka’s ‘dve vidye veditavye’ say must be known. For him ‘avyaya’ means one who never diminishes in nature, qualities or glory. ‘Guardian of the eternal dharma’ means the one who protects the eternal Vedic dharma through his incarnations. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಬೆರಗಿನಿಂದ ತಿಳಿವಿಗೆ ಏರುವುದು ಅರ್ಜುನನ ದಾರಿ. ಸುಂದರವಾದದ್ದನ್ನು ಕಂಡಾಗ ‘ಇದರ ಹಿಂದೆ ಏನಿದೆ’ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಮನಸ್ಸನ್ನು ಆಳಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
Rising from wonder to understanding is Arjuna’s way. The habit of asking ‘what lies behind this?’ when we see something beautiful deepens the mind.
‘ಧರ್ಮದ ರಕ್ಷಕ’ ಅವನು. ನಮ್ಮ ಪಾಲಿನ ಸಣ್ಣ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ, ವ್ಯವಹಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಮಾಣಿಕತೆ.
He is the guardian of dharma. Our own small share of guarding it is honesty in our work and in our dealings.
