Context and commentary on verse 11.19
Ramanuja gives a lovely sense to ‘the moon and sun your eyes’: eyes that hold both the graciousness of the moon and the fierce power of the sun. On the friendly who bow to him falls the coolness of the moon, on the hostile the heat of the sun. For him the word ‘virya’, power, is only an example that points to all his qualities: knowledge, strength, sovereignty, energy and splendour.
Madhva reads this like ‘aham kratuh’ (9.16), and quotes the Purusha Sukta’s ‘chandrama manaso jatash chakshoh suryo ajayata’: the moon was born of his mind, the sun of his eye. His explanation is that all the gods are born from his limbs. Shankara and Sridhara Swami unfold the compounds directly, and Sridhara Swami also takes ‘without beginning, middle or end’ to mean one free of origin, continuance and dissolution.

For life today
The coolness of the moon and the heat of the sun in the same eye. Raising children and teaching students both need love as well as discipline.
Coolness alone stops growth, heat alone burns. The wisdom to know which is needed when is the greater thing.
