ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಯಥಾ ನದೀನಾಂ ಬಹವೋಽಂಬುವೇಗಾಃ ಸಮುದ್ರಮೇವಾಭಿಮುಖಾ ದ್ರವಂತಿ।
ತಥಾ ತವಾಮೀ ನರಲೋಕವೀರಾ ವಿಶಂತಿ ವಕ್ತ್ರಾಣ್ಯಭಿವಿಜ್ವಲಂತಿ ॥ 28 ॥
ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ದೇವನಾಗರಿ)
यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बुवेगाः समुद्रमेवाभिमुखा द्रवन्ति।
तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा विशन्ति वक्त्राण्यभिविज्वलन्ति ॥ 28 ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಯಥಾ ನದೀನಾಂ ಬಹವಃ ಅಂಬುವೇಗಾಃ (यथा नदीनां बहवः अम्बुवेगाः, yathā nadīnāṃ bahavaḥ ambuvegāḥ) = ನದಿಗಳ ಅನೇಕ ಜಲಪ್ರವಾಹಗಳು ಹೇಗೆ (just as the many currents of rivers)
- ಸಮುದ್ರಮ್ ಏವ ಅಭಿಮುಖಾಃ ದ್ರವಂತಿ (समुद्रम् एव अभिमुखाः द्रवन्ति, samudram eva abhimukhāḥ dravanti) = ಸಮುದ್ರದ ಕಡೆಗೇ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತವೆಯೋ (flow towards the ocean alone)
- ತಥಾ ಅಮೀ ನರಲೋಕವೀರಾಃ (तथा अमी नरलोकवीराः, tathā amī naralokavīrāḥ) = ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಈ ಮನುಷ್ಯಲೋಕದ ವೀರರು (so these heroes of the human world)
- ತವ ಅಭಿವಿಜ್ವಲಂತಿ ವಕ್ತ್ರಾಣಿ ವಿಶಂತಿ (तव अभिविज्वलन्ति वक्त्राणि विशन्ति, tava abhivijvalanti vaktrāṇi viśanti) = ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಿನ್ನ ಬಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ (enter your flaming mouths)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ನದಿಗಳ ಅನೇಕ ಜಲಪ್ರವಾಹಗಳು ಸಮುದ್ರದ ಕಡೆಗೇ ಹರಿದು ಅದನ್ನು ಸೇರುವಂತೆ, ಈ ಮನುಷ್ಯಲೋಕದ ವೀರರು ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ನಿನ್ನ ಬಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Just as the many currents of rivers flow towards the ocean and enter it, so these heroes of the human world enter your flaming mouths.

ಇಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಎರಡು ಹೋಲಿಕೆಗಳು: ನದಿ ಮತ್ತು ಪತಂಗ. ಶ್ರೀಧರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಗಳು ಇವುಗಳ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ಗುರುತಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ನದಿಯ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಇಚ್ಛೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಅವಶರಾಗಿ ಸೆಳೆತಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕವರಿಗೆ, ಪತಂಗದ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ ತಿಳಿದೂ ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ ನುಗ್ಗುವವರಿಗೆ. ನದಿಗಳು ಬೇರೆ ಬೇರೆ ದಾರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹರಿದರೂ ಸೇರುವುದು ಒಂದೇ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು.
Two comparisons begin here: the river and the moth. Sridhara Swami marks their difference beautifully: the river is the image for those drawn in helplessly, without their own will, and the moth for those who rush in knowingly, of their own accord. Rivers flow by different paths, but they all join the one ocean.
ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರಿಗೆ ‘ನರಲೋಕವೀರರು’ ಎಂದರೆ ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಮನುಷ್ಯಲೋಕದ ಶೂರರು. ರಾಮಾನುಜಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕವನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನದರ ಜೊತೆಗೇ ಬಿಡಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ: ನದಿಗಳ ಪ್ರವಾಹ ಸಮುದ್ರವನ್ನು ಸೇರುವಂತೆ, ಪತಂಗಗಳು ಬೆಂಕಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರುವಂತೆ, ಈ ರಾಜರು ತಾವಾಗಿಯೇ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮ ನಾಶಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಿನ್ನ ಬಾಯಿಗಳನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಮಧ್ವಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ವಿವರಣೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಪಠ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕಕ್ಕೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.
For Shankara the ‘heroes of the human world’ are Bhishma and the other champions of the world of men. Ramanuja unfolds this verse together with the next: as the currents of rivers join the ocean and as moths reach the fire, these kings of their own accord rush swiftly into your mouths to their own destruction. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಎಲ್ಲ ನದಿಗಳೂ ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಸಮುದ್ರ ಸೇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಎಷ್ಟೇ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವೀರನಾದರೂ ಕಾಲದ ಎದುರು ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಒಂದೇ. ಈ ನೆನಪು ಅಹಂಕಾರವನ್ನು ಕರಗಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
All rivers finally join the ocean. However great a hero may be, before time all are the same. This remembrance melts pride.
ಅದೇ ನೆನಪು ಭಯ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ನದಿ ಹರಿಯುವಾಗ ದಾರಿಯುದ್ದಕ್ಕೂ ಹೊಲಗಳಿಗೆ ನೀರುಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಬದುಕಿನ ಹರಿವೂ ದಾರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಉಪಯುಕ್ತವಾಗಲಿ.
The same remembrance need not bring fear. As a river flows it waters the fields all along the way. May the flow of our lives too be of use to others along the way.
