Context and commentary on verse 11.37
The last line of the verse, ‘tvam aksharam sad asat tat param yat’, takes the acharyas down different paths. For Shankara ‘sat’ is what exists and ‘asat’ what is the object of the notion ‘it is not’. These are only adjuncts of the imperishable. In truth you are the imperishable, beyond both, of which the knowers of the Veda speak. For Sridhara Swami sat is the manifest and asat the unmanifest. For ‘greater than Brahma’ Shankara’s reason is that he is the cause even of Hiranyagarbha.
Ramanuja’s reading is distinctive. For him ‘akshara’ here means the principle of the individual self, the imperishable self of which the Katha Upanishad says ‘na jayate mriyate va vipashchit’. ‘Sat’ and ‘asat’ are the effect and cause states of prakriti. ‘Tat param’ is the self freed from bondage. Since all these are his body, all of them are ‘you’. Madhva takes verses thirty-seven to forty together as the answer to why it is ‘fitting’. For him ‘mahatma’ means the complete Self, and ‘tat param’ the one above both sat and asat.

For life today
The question ‘why should they not bow?’ holds its own answer. Bowing to the source that raised us is natural gratitude.
Parents, teachers and the elders who built our field of work are the ‘first makers’ of our lives. On the day we remember them, our work gains new meaning.
