Context and commentary on verse 11.30
Shankara gives ‘lelihyase’ the sense of ‘you are tasting’, and the name ‘Vishnu’ the sense of one whose nature is to pervade everywhere. Sridhara Swami takes ‘the worlds’ to mean all these warriors. Shankara builds a bridge to the next verse: since you are of such a fierce nature, tell me who you are.
Ramanuja recalls the reason behind this form. Arjuna had asked, ‘show me your imperishable Self’ (11.4). In showing his sovereignty, which knows no restraint, Krishna laid open this most terrible form as well. Arjuna asked for the whole truth, and the whole truth includes destruction. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

It is easy to ask for ‘the whole truth’, and hard to face it. Doctors too must learn the art of telling a patient the truth in a way that also gives the strength to bear it.
Watching scenes of violence again and again can affect the mind, especially in children. Knowing the news is one thing, drowning in it is another.
