Context and commentary on verse 6.35

Krishna first agrees fully with Arjuna: ‘no doubt’, what you say is true. Then, with ‘but’, he gives two means. The same two words appear in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra: the stilling of the mind’s movements comes through practice and dispassion.

Shankara defines both exactly. Practice is bringing back, again and again, the same kind of awareness onto one object. Dispassion is freedom from thirst for pleasures seen and unseen, born of repeatedly seeing their faults. Dispassion checks the mind’s outward flow.

Sridhara Swami separates their work: practice checks laya, torpor and drowsiness; dispassion checks vikshepa, running outward. For Ramanuja practice is the attraction that comes from repeatedly contemplating the self as a mine of good qualities, and dispassion is the absence of thirst that comes from seeing faults in other objects. His word ‘somehow’ admits that this is not easy. Our source text has no comment by Madhva on this verse.

For life today

This is one of the Gita’s most encouraging answers. Krishna does not make the problem small, nor does he accept that it is impossible. ‘Hard, but possible’ is also the honest thing a good doctor says to a patient.

Practice means doing it again and again; dispassion means reducing the pull. Changing any old habit needs both: doing the new thing daily, and seeing the attraction of the old one at its true worth.
