Context and commentary on verse 6.11
This verse and the next form one sentence. Shankara makes a small note on the order of the three layers of the seat: the order in the verse is the reverse of the order of spreading. Sridhara Swami spells it out: kusha grass below, a deer or tiger skin over it, and a cloth on top.
For Shankara a ‘clean’ place is a secluded place, clean by nature or made so. Ramanuja says it is a place not occupied or owned by the impure and untouched by impure things. He also says the seat is made of wood or the like, and is ‘sapashraya’, with a support to lean on. It is a seat that brings clarity to the mind.
‘Neither too high nor too low’ is the first sign of this chapter’s middle way. The same point returns about food and sleep.

For life today
Today there is no need for a seat of animal skin, and using the skins of some animals is against the law as well. A folded cloth, a mat, or a chair of the right height is enough. The verse aims at steadiness and comfort, not particular materials.
Those with knee pain, back pain, or of advanced age need not force themselves to sit on the floor. Ramanuja himself speaks of a seat with a support to lean on. If the mind keeps running to the pain, meditation does not happen.
