Context and commentary on verse 6.12
The sentence of the last verse ends here. After the outer seat comes the inner seat, one-pointedness of mind. ‘Ekagra’ means having a single point: bringing a scattered mind to one point.
For Shankara ‘purification of the self’ means purity of the inner instrument, the mind. Sridhara Swami calls it the calming of the mind.
For Ramanuja purification of the self means release from bondage, and yoga means seeing the self. He comments on these two verses together. Madhva simply identifies the yoga of verses twelve to fourteen as the yoga of absorption.

For life today
Almost everyone notices that in the first few minutes of meditation the mind runs off everywhere. That is not failure; it is the raw material of practice. Bringing the mind back to one point again and again is the practice.
The purpose the verse names is worth noticing: for purification. Not for marvellous experiences, not for powers. If a little of the mind’s dust settles, that is the fruit.
