Context and commentary on verse 6.45
The answer to Arjuna’s question is completed here. Sridhara Swami sees the ‘how much more’ argument here: if even one of little effort is not lost, what need is there to speak of one who strives firmly?
Shankara opens ‘perfected through many births’ as gathering impressions little by little over many births, being perfected by them, gaining right vision and reaching the supreme goal. For Ramanuja, one purified by the store of merit earned over many births reaches the supreme goal again, even though he slipped.
Madhva stresses that this is not the work of one birth and quotes the Naradiya: the seeker endowed with great faith and devoted to Vishnu, knowing, meditating and seeing over many births, enters Narayana, and not otherwise.

For life today
The phrase ‘many births’ may discourage some. But its other meaning is a great comfort: there is no pressure to finish everything in this one life.
Great changes happen slowly, in personal life and in society. Our work is to do our share of the effort honestly; we need not set ourselves a deadline for perfection.
