The Blessed Lord said: He who does the work that ought to be done, not depending on its fruit, is a renunciate and a yogi; not the one who has merely given up the sacred fire, nor the one who has given up action.

Context and commentary on verse 6.1

The sixth chapter expands the yoga of meditation outlined in the last two verses of the fifth. Sridhara Swami states its gist at the outset: even after the mind is purified, there is no liberation from renunciation alone without meditation. But before meditation Krishna praises the yoga of action once more. The purpose is that no one, hearing the last chapter, should give up action in haste.

‘Niragni’ means one who has given up the sacrificial fire, ‘akriya’ one who has given up other acts too, such as austerity and charity. Shankara raises an objection: in scripture, is the renunciate not precisely the one who has given up fire and ritual? His answer: calling the one who does obligatory work without desire for its fruit a ‘renunciate’ here is by way of praise. The point of the verse is that no one should be thought a renunciate merely for having given up the fire.

Ramanuja’s reading is warm. In one who acts thinking ‘this work itself, as worship of the Supreme Person who is my friend, is my purpose, and nothing gained by it’, both steadfastness in knowledge and steadfastness in action are present. In one who has left action and stands in knowledge alone, only one is.

Madhva goes further. Even one in the fourth ashrama has a fire and rites, and he quotes a saying that in the order of renunciation Brahman is the fire and its worship is the rite. So one with neither fire nor action is neither a renunciate nor a yogi.

For life today

We are drawn to the idea of giving things up. The story of someone who quit a job, or left everything and climbed a mountain, is pleasant to hear. This verse turns the question of who truly renounces in another direction.

The night-shift nurse, the teacher at a village school, the clerk who does work no one sees and does it well. The Gita calls such people, who do what must be done without counting the fruit, renunciates.
