Context and commentary on verse 6.13
This verse and the next form one sentence. Sridhara Swami says ‘kaya’ means the trunk of the body, and that one should be straight from the base of the spine to the crown. Shankara notes that one who holds himself ‘even’ may still sway, which is why the word ‘still’ is added.
Shankara gives an important clarification about the gaze at the tip of the nose. Here the word ‘iva’, ‘as if’, is understood. Staring at the nose-tip itself is not intended; then the mind would settle on the nose, not on the self. The aim is to keep the gaze gathered there, as it were, and to fix the mind in the self, as verse twenty-five says.
Sridhara Swami explains it as half-closed eyes, as in verse twenty-seven of the fifth chapter. Ramanuja says again that the body is held steady ‘with the help of a support’.

It is a common experience of those who meditate that an upright back helps breathing and attention, while a slumped posture soon brings drowsiness. But upright does not mean rigid. Let the shoulders stay loose.
Those with neck or spine problems would do well to take advice from their doctor or physiotherapist before sitting long in one posture. Changing position now and then is no fault.
