Context and commentary on verse 6.18
This answers the question of when yoga can be said to be accomplished. Two marks: the mind rests in the self alone, and the pull of outer desires has gone.
For Shankara ‘well-disciplined’ means a one-pointed mind that has let go of thoughts of outer things. ‘All desires’ means desire for all things seen and unseen, of this world and the next. Sridhara Swami also speaks of the thirst for pleasures here and hereafter having gone.
Ramanuja gives the reason: a mind that has found the self to be the highest good becomes still there, and then other desires loosen of themselves. Such a person is fit for yoga. Madhva says little here.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
It is hard to crush desires one by one by force. But when the mind finds a greater attraction, the small pulls fall behind of themselves; that is the gist of Ramanuja’s point.
Many have had the experience of being so absorbed in a task that they forget mealtime. That is not fasting; the centre of attraction has shifted. The steadiness of meditation is a deeper form of this.
