Context and commentary on verse 6.14
The sentence of the last verse ends here. After the posture of the body comes the posture of the mind: calm, fearlessness, restraint. The last two words give meditation a centre: ‘mind on me, me as the highest’. From here on, the meditation of the Gita is not a meditation on emptiness but one turned towards the Lord.
For Shankara the ‘vow of brahmacharya’ means the rules of the student: serving the teacher, living on alms and the like. To show the sense of ‘with me as the highest’ he gives an example: a man in love may have his mind on a person, yet regard a king or Mahadeva as his highest refuge. Here the mind’s object and the highest refuge are one, the Lord.
Ramanuja opens ‘serene in mind’ as a mind at deep rest and closes with ‘he should sit thinking of me alone’. In his comment on the next verse he gives the reason: only when the mind rests in the Lord, its auspicious support, does it become stainless. Sridhara Swami opens ‘restraining the mind’ as drawing the mind back.

It is notable that the word ‘free of fear’ appears here. When we sit in silence, many inner fears rise to the surface. Being ready for that is part of meditation.
For some, especially those with old trauma or severe anxiety, long silent meditation can at times increase distress. If that happens, it is better to begin with short periods, with an experienced guide, and to see a doctor if needed.
