Context and commentary on verse 6.46
The chapter’s teaching ends in a direct call: ‘be a yogi’. There are three groups for comparison: ascetics who punish the body, the learned who have read, and performers of rites who sacrifice.
Who the ‘learned’ are here matters. Shankara says those skilled in the meaning of the scriptures, not knowers of the self. Sridhara Swami also says those with scriptural knowledge. For Ramanuja, those with knowledge other than knowledge of the self. For Madhva, those who know about yoga. The ascetics are those who keep severe vows such as krcchra and chandrayana.
Madhva quotes a ladder of means from the Naradiya: knowledge is better than meditating without knowing, meditating with knowledge is better still, seeing is better than that, and there is no means greater than devotion. This last line is a direct bridge to the next verse.

Punishing the body, reading more, performing more rites: these are achievements that show outwardly. What the Gita places above them is inner steadiness, which does not show.
In medicine too we know that more degrees and more papers do not guarantee a good doctor. What matters more is how steady and how present the mind is when one sits before the patient.
