Context and commentary on verse 6.26
This is the most honest verse of meditation. The Gita admits that the mind wanders, and has one answer: bring it back, again and again. Sridhara Swami calls this pratyahara, withdrawal, the step after the holding of the last verse.
Shankara also gives the method of bringing it back. One examines the true nature of the sound or other cause that drew the mind away and sees it as mere appearance, and one cultivates dispassion. So, by the strength of practice, the mind comes to rest in the self.
Ramanuja’s method is different: ‘contemplating the surpassing joy’. One draws the mind by the sense that greater joy lies in the self. One lessens the pull of what the mind ran to, the other increases the pull of the goal. Madhva cites a usage in the Bhagavata to show that ‘yato yatah’ means ‘towards whatever’.

For life today
This is also the heart of many of today’s methods of attention training: noticing that the mind has gone elsewhere, and bringing it back gently without scolding oneself. Each return is one repetition, like a set of exercise.
The mind wandering is not failure; it is its nature. Failure is not noticing that it has wandered, or, having noticed, not wanting to bring it back.
