Context and commentary on verse 6.29

This verse recalls the Isha Upanishad’s ‘he who sees all beings in the self’. But the three acharyas part clearly on what ‘the self in all’ means. The position of each is given here in his own terms.

For Shankara this is the vision of oneness. One’s own self is present in all beings from Brahma to a blade of grass, and all of them are one in one’s own self. ‘Seeing the same’ is the undivided knowledge that the self which is Brahman is one in all unequal beings. Sridhara Swami holds the same view: seeing the self, free of the limits of the body, in all, and all in the self, without difference.

For Ramanuja this is the vision of sameness, not oneness. Selves freed from prakriti are all alike, since knowledge is their form. One sees one’s own self as like the self of all, and the self of all as like one’s own. Seeing one self is, by that sameness, like seeing all selves. He cites ‘seeing the same’, Arjuna’s word ‘sameness’ in the next verse but three, and the fifth chapter’s ‘Brahman is flawless and the same’.

For Madhva the ‘self’ here is the Supreme Lord, and this is the object of meditation: seeing the Lord in all beings and all beings in the Lord, and seeing him as equal in lordship and the like whether in four-faced Brahma or in a blade of grass. He quotes a verse of the Bhagavata. Deciding which is right is not the work of this page.

For life today

These three readings differ in doctrine, but in life they point one way: the wall that makes the person before us ‘other’ must grow a little thinner.

The pain of our own family touches us at once; a stranger’s pain stays as news. Even a little narrowing of that gap is a step towards the vision the Gita speaks of.
