Context and commentary on verse 6.27

The grammar here is subtle. The yogi does not seize joy; joy ‘upaiti’, comes to him. Sridhara Swami glosses it as ‘of itself’: for one who has brought the mind back again and again, when restlessness is spent, the joy of absorption arrives on its own.

For Shankara ‘whose rajas has subsided’ means one in whom the restlessness of afflictions such as delusion is spent; ‘become Brahman’ means liberated while living, firm in the conviction ‘Brahman alone is all’; ‘free of stain’ means free of merit and demerit.

Ramanuja sees a chain of causes: because the mind is still in the self, stains are burnt away; from that rajas is destroyed; from that he ‘becomes Brahman’, that is, stands in his own nature. The supreme joy that comes to him is the experience of the self. Our source text has no comment by Madhva on this verse.

For life today

Those with insomnia know well that sleep cannot be forced. The harder one tries, the further it goes. If the mind is calmed before bed, it comes of itself. Deep peace is like that.

Rajas is rushing, hurry, the itch for something more. On days when it lessens, even small things give joy; that is the experience of all of us.
