Context and commentary on verse 6.28

The first line of verse fifteen returns here, but the fruit is different: there peace, here joy. The word ‘with ease’ is notable: at this stage it is not a hard achievement. Shankara and Ramanuja both gloss it as ‘without effort’.

Shankara calls ‘brahma-samsparsha’ a joy that has the touch of the Supreme Brahman; ‘atyanta’ means going beyond all limits. For Sridhara Swami contact with Brahman means the direct realisation that removes ignorance, and one who has it is liberated while living.

For Ramanuja it is the boundless joy that consists in experiencing Brahman. He reads the next four verses as four stages in the ripening of yoga. Madhva calls this an expansion of the previous verse.

For life today

In any skill a stage comes when what was hard becomes natural: the first week of learning to ride a bicycle, and a ride a year later. The word ‘with ease’ points to that stage.

But that stage is reached through the word ‘ever’. Without continuity, ease does not come.
