Context and commentary on verse 6.43
Effort does not start from zero; it resumes from where it stopped. The word ‘further’ points to more effort than before.
Ramanuja gives a lovely image for this: ‘like one who wakes from sleep’. As one picks up on waking the page one was reading before falling asleep. He adds that this time he strives in such a way that obstacles do not defeat him.
For Shankara ‘the joining of understanding’ is the connection with the understanding of the former body; by the impressions of past practice he strives more. For Sridhara Swami it is the joining with an understanding directed to Brahman, in either of the two kinds of birth just described.

Many have had the experience of taking up again, after many years, something once learned, and learning it faster than the first time: music, swimming, a language. Hands and mind remember something.
It is true of health habits too. Those who once exercised regularly and then stopped find, when they begin again, that the road is more familiar. The old effort was not wasted.
