Context and commentary on verse 6.47
The sixth chapter, and with it the first six-chapter section of the Gita, ends with devotion. After all the instructions on meditation, seat, breath and control of the mind, the final measure is two phrases: ‘with faith’ and ‘the inner self absorbed in me’.
Shankara opens ‘all yogis’ as those who meditate on Rudra, the Adityas and others, and says that among them one who fixes his mind on Vasudeva and serves him with faith is supremely steadfast. Sridhara Swami says that among yogis devoted to restraints and observances the devotee is best, and the sense is ‘therefore become my devotee’.
Ramanuja takes a strong position through grammar. The genitive here does not mean ‘one among them’ but ‘than all of them’. Before Mount Meru, even if one mustard seed is larger than another, all are equally small; so are ascetics and yogis before this devotee. The ‘inner self absorbed in me’ is a mind that, out of surpassing love for the Lord, cannot sustain itself without him. From here, he says, the following chapters open this supreme knowledge.
Learning technique matters, but in the end what bears fruit is the love behind the technique. It is true of care too: skill becomes complete only when concern joins it.
Across six chapters the Gita has spoken of action, knowledge and meditation. In its last line it says: let faith and love be inside all of these. Think about it: are not the things we do well the things we love doing?
