Context and commentary on verse 6.30

The ‘self’ of the last verse becomes ‘me’ here. Krishna places himself at the centre of that vision. ‘I am not lost’ is a very intimate phrase: neither vanishes from the other’s sight.

For Shankara ‘me’ is Vasudeva, the self of all. ‘Not lost’ means not becoming remote. Since he and I are one self, neither can become distant to the other; is one’s own self not dear to oneself, he asks.

Ramanuja reads this as the next stage of ripening yoga. He quotes the Mundaka Upanishad, ‘stainless, he attains the highest sameness’, on the self freed of merit and demerit coming to share the Lord’s nature. By this sameness, one who has seen his own self also sees the Lord’s likeness, so neither becomes invisible to the other.

Madhva’s reading is of protection and devotion. ‘I am not lost to him’ means I always bear his welfare. ‘He is not lost to me’ means he always remains my devotee. A master who does not protect is no master, a servant who does not serve is no servant, he says, citing common usage. For Sridhara Swami the Lord becomes manifest and looks on him with eyes of grace.

For life today

Many know the experience of loved ones far away still feeling near in the mind. This verse speaks of a deeper nearness: for one who sees everywhere, losing is not possible at all.

The fear of losing is the root of most of our anxieties. In a vision that sees one presence everywhere, that fear has less room to stand.
