Let him be a brahmachari student, or a householder, or a renunciant, or an ascetic with matted locks, or someone outside all of these, or just any man at all. O Bhava, what comes of that? O Pashupati, if anyone’s heart lotus is subject to you, then, O Shambhu, you become his own, and you carry the burden of his worldly life as well.
Context and commentary on verse 11
Four words in this verse name the four ashramas, the stages of life. Many read vatu as the brahmachari boy at his studies, gehi as the householder busy with a home, jati as the forest dweller with matted hair, and yati as the renunciant who has given up everything. But the poet does not keep the traditional order, naming the yati before the jati. Nor does he stop with the list. He adds ‘taditarah’, one who is none of these, and ‘yah kashchit narah’, any man at all, and so throws the whole frame open.
The sound ‘bhava’ returns again and again through the verse: bhavatu (let him be), bhava (the vocative, O Bhava), bhavati (comes about), bhavadadhinam (subject to you), bhavasi (you become), bhavabharam (the burden of worldly existence). Bhava is both a name of Shiva and a name of this world of birth and death. In the last line the two senses stand together: Bhava carries the burden of bhava.
The turn of the verse is in its last line. We usually say that the devotee becomes God’s. The poet reverses it: ‘tadiyas tvam bhavasi’, you become his. More than that, you yourself carry the burden of his worldly life. In the ninth verse he spoke of offering the heart itself as a lotus, and here that same heart lotus returns with a condition attached. The feeling is close to the words of the ninth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, ‘yogakshemam vahamy aham’, I carry their getting and their keeping.
The verse does not say that the stages of life, or study, or austerity, are worthless. It says only that they are not the measure. The tenth verse said the kind of body does not matter, this one says the outward station does not matter, and the next says the dwelling place does not matter. All three ask one question in three ways. The metre is shikharini, seventeen syllables to a quarter, with the pause after the sixth.
