From the service of deities who are themselves subject to birth and death, not a particle of happiness arises, and of that there is no doubt. Those who here worship Samba, the Lord who is with Amba, the unborn and deathless one, obtain the highest joy, and they are the blessed ones.

Context and commentary on verse 83

The verse stands in two halves, a denial in the first and an affirmation in the second. To say first that nothing is to be had here and only then where it is to be had is an old shape of teaching. In ‘sukhaleshah’, lesha means a speck, so the verse does not say that little is gained but that not a speck is. The flat statement ‘samshayo nasti tatra’, there is no doubt of it, is uncommon in the hymns.

The phrase ‘deities joined with birth and death’ has the puranas behind it. There the gods too have a span, those who hold the post of Indra change with the manvantaras, and at the end of a kalpa the worlds themselves end. Many therefore read the verse not as disparaging other deities but as saying that an endless fruit cannot come from a thing that has an end. Shankara himself composed hymns to many deities, and in the final view of Advaita all deities are forms of the one reality. Holding both of these together is the honest way to read it.

The name ‘Samba’ is formed from sa and Amba, one who is with the Mother. The one to be worshipped here is not a god standing alone but a god with the Mother beside him. The eighty-first said umamahesha, and the eighty-fourth will speak of Gauri’s presence. In the Shivananda Lahari Shiva is not solitary but a householder with his consort, and that is the tone of the whole hymn.

‘Ajani’ and ‘amritarupa’ both speak by denial, the one not born and the one not dying. Speaking of the supreme reality in this negative way fills the Upanishads. It should be set against ‘jananamrityuta’ in the first half, for the two are the two faces of one pair.

The small word ‘iha’ matters. It indicates that the fruit is not to be waited for in another world but is here, in this life. It pairs with ‘jivan muktah’ of the eighty-first verse. The metre has changed here, and the shardulavikridita of the two previous verses is gone. Counting, each quarter has fifteen syllables, the first six of them short and longs following, which is the malini metre.

A fixed deposit receipt carries two dates, the day the money went in and the day the term ends. Once the second date arrives the slip is of no further use, and the money has to be taken out and placed somewhere else.

We too keep placing our time and our trust in one thing and another. Along with how much we have placed, it is useful to look now and then at whether what we have placed it in carries a closing date.
