The divine scents that are ready to break the bad tendencies and the rest, which come of the trouble of the noose of hope, are not faint ones. With those scents, may the lotus foot of him whose garment is the quarters of the sky make the box that is my mind fragrant.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 74ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 74
The picture of the box needs opening out first. A peti is the wooden box in which clothes, scents and ornaments are kept. Scent is not applied to a box from outside. Something fragrant is laid inside and the lid closed, and as the days pass the box itself takes on that smell. The mind is that box, and what is laid inside it is Shiva’s foot.
The key to this verse lies in the word ‘vasana’. Coming from the root vas, it means both the old leaning left behind in the mind and a scent. So durvasana is at once a bad tendency and a bad smell, and in one word the verse says that the mind carries the smell of its old habits. The way to be rid of it is the way of scent as well: not scrubbing, but placing a strong and sweet fragrance inside.
The word ‘asha’ occurs twice in the verse, in two different senses. The first is ashapasha, the noose of hope, a familiar image. The second is ashashatika, where asha is a direction of space and shati a garment, so it means one who wraps the quarters of the sky about him as his only cloth, Shiva the naked one. The placing carries its own wit: the man caught in a rope has come to be freed by one who wears nothing.
One small grammatical point. ‘Tanotu’ is the imperative of the root tan, let it spread or let it make. Its subject is ‘padaravindam’, and ‘vasitam’ is an accusative agreeing with ‘petim’. So the sentence is, let Shiva’s foot make my box fragrant. What deserves notice is this much: nothing else is asked for in the prayer. The one request is that the smell of the mind should change.
As to the metre: this verse is shorter than the three before it. There are eleven syllables in each quarter, and the arrangement of long and short is the same in all four, with only the sixth and the ninth syllables light. That arrangement is the one called shalini.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
The smell that comes from a wooden trunk shut for years is not the smell of the clothes but of the air closed in with them. It is not got rid of by scrubbing. The trunk is left in the sun for a day or two, and a dried leaf or a piece of soap is put inside.
Old leanings loosen in the same way. Putting something good inside and waiting works better than scolding them out. The change makes itself known slowly, on days when we are not watching for it.
