ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Shiva, there are those who put on the collyrium of meditation, look well into the region of darkness, and break it open with the great offerings that are the mantras of the Lord’s names. Here in this world they lift up your lotus foot, resorted to by the gods and adorned with serpents. They are the ones whose lives have borne fruit.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 72ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 72
Every step of the verse recalls the old procedure for finding treasure buried in the ground: putting on the eyes a magic salve that shows what lies under the earth, setting out an offering for the guardian spirits, breaking the ground, and lifting out the pot with a serpent coiled on it. Here the salve is meditation, the offering is the names of the Lord, the dark place is the darkness within us, and the treasure with its serpent ornament is Shiva’s foot. The verse does not name this picture, but many read every word of it as pointing there.
‘Tamahpradesha’ works in two directions. One sense is the dark place under the earth where the treasure lies. Tamas also means ignorance and dullness, and in that sense it is the murk inside us. What deserves notice, besides, is the word ‘bhittva’. The verse does not say light up the darkness but break it open. The suggestion is that an old layer settled hard needs a blow rather than a lamp.
There is a fine turn in the matter of the serpent. Folk belief holds that a serpent guards buried treasure, and it is that serpent which frightens the digger. In Shiva’s case the serpent is not a guard but an ornament: the very thing that frightens stands there as jewellery. ‘Divyashritam’ says something further, that what the gods themselves resort to lies below our own darkness.
Two grammatical points may slip past in reading. In the last quarter ‘te’ occurs twice. The first is genitive, meaning yours, and the second is nominative plural, meaning they, so one form does two pieces of work. ‘Mahabalibhih’, besides, is an instrumental plural agreeing with ‘mantraih’. The verse is therefore saying that the names are themselves the offering, and no other offering is needed.
‘Kritartha’ is the weighty word of this verse: one whose purpose has been accomplished, whose work in life is done. The word ‘iha’, here, makes clear that this fulfilment is not a matter of what follows death. ‘Udvahanti’, besides, is in the present tense: they are doing it now. The metre is the same as in the previous verse, vasantatilaka of fourteen syllables to a quarter.

At a post office counter, when we ask about a packet that has not reached us, the staff first ask for the number on the receipt. Then they go into the room behind and search among the bags and the racks. What we learn when it is found is only this, that the packet was there all along.
That searching is not pleasant work, and there is dust and darkness in the room behind. The work of our own mind is like that. What seems lost need not be fetched anew. We have to go into the place we have left unattended and look.
