ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

The tongue that speaks of Bharga, that is a tongue. The eyes that look upon him, those are eyes. The hands that always worship him, those two are hands. The man who remembers him, he alone has done what there was to do.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 94ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 94

The verse is built almost wholly of pronouns, and so has to be read by pairing them. The first two quarters give four demonstratives: sa, te, tau, sah. The third quarter gives four relatives in the same order: ya, ye, yau, yah. The fourth gives four verbs: vadati, ikshete, arcatah, smarati. The sense therefore joins up like this. Which speaks, that is the tongue. Which two look, those are the eyes. Which two worship, those two alone are hands. Who remembers, he alone has done what was to be done.

There is no room for confusion in the pairing, because number and gender themselves show what goes with what. Vadati and smarati are singular, ikshete and arcatah dual. So the single tongue and the single man take singular verbs, and the paired eyes and hands take dual ones. Gender does the same work: ya with the feminine rasana, ye with the neuter nayane, yau with the masculine karau, yah with the man. How much the Sanskrit dual does here is hard to carry over into another language.

Read for its sense, the verse counts four acts: speech, sight, the work of the hands, and remembrance. The first three are outward and the fourth inward, and it is to the fourth that ‘kritakrityah’ is attached. Verse ninety made a similar count of the limbs, with vachasa, manasa and shirasa. What was said there of himself, of what he does with each, is here put as a statement that holds for anyone.

A word on the name ‘Bharga’. It means radiance or light, and is one of the old names of Shiva. The same word stands in the Gayatri mantra, in ‘bhargo devasya dhimahi’, where it is the splendour of the god. Being short, it sits easily in this line of pronouns: one name, and everything around it a pronoun.

As to the metre: this too is a measure counted by morae. The quarters have eight, twelve, six and twelve syllables, and by morae they come to twelve, eighteen, twelve and eighteen, the count working out when the common licence of treating a short final syllable as long is used. That measure is called giti, of the arya class, and the verse before this one and the one after it have the same shape.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

Look at the hands of an old couple and you see the same small work of four decades: cutting vegetables, folding clothes, one hand taking the other while crossing a road. What is between the two is said by that work.

The verse counts our parts in the same way: tongue, eyes, hands, mind. It does not ask for more hands or sharper eyes. Its question is which way the ones we already have are turned.
