The lord of Shri and of the Earth himself took on the state of a boar out of longing for that earth. What then comes of such ground? O good mind, obtain rather the worship of the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord, the bunded field in which the great herbs of liberation are grown.
Context and commentary on verse 73
Behind the verse stands the story of the boar avatar. The Purana tells that Vishnu took the form of a boar in order to lift up the earth. Shankaracharya makes the word ‘bhudara’ work in two directions. One sense joins bhu with the root dri, tearing the earth, which is a boar. Dara means a wife, so the other sense is he who has Bhudevi for his wife, and in that second sense ‘shribhudara’ is Vishnu, who has both Shri and the Earth for his wives.
The talk of land runs on to the end of the verse, moving from bhu to kedara. A kedara is a field bunded round so that water stands in it and a crop can be raised. So the verse does not dismiss the mind’s wish for land. It changes the land. The crop grown in that field is liberation, and it is called a mahaushadhi, a great herb. Kedara is also the name of one of Shiva’s shrines, and many see that suggestion here as well.
It should be said that this is no disparagement of Vishnu. In the final view of Advaita all deities are forms of the one reality, and tradition remembers the boar form with respect. The verse is doing something else. It takes up a story everyone knows, shows how the longing for land draws even the greatest, and then points the mind towards a different piece of ground.
‘Yadapekshaya’ is read in two ways. ‘Yat’ is neuter, and ‘bhajanam’ at the end of the verse is neuter too. One way is therefore to join them, out of longing for which worship Vishnu himself took the boar’s form, and to take ‘kimatah’ as asking what greater proof than this there could be. The other way takes ‘yat’ as pointing to the earth, and asks what then comes of such ground. Both readings end at the same single command: obtain the worship of the feet of the Supreme Lord.
Two small points at the end. In the older poetry mahaushadhi carries the sense of a herb that stops what nothing else will stop. Here the word is a name given to liberation, and it is not a statement about medicine. The vocative ‘sumate’, besides, deserves notice: it is not Shiva who is addressed but the poet’s own intelligence. The metre is the same as in the two previous verses, vasantatilaka of fourteen syllables to a quarter.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
A paddy seedbed is one small corner of the field. The seedlings for the whole field come up just there, and water, soil and watching all go first to that corner.
In our own day too, tending one small corner properly yields more than doing everything on a large scale at once. Which piece of ground it is matters more than how much of it there is.
