ಶ್ಲೋಕ 92ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 92
In the first two quarters six words begin with the sound du or dau. The prefix dus or dur means bad or hard. Durita is a sin, durakshara a bad syllable, daurbhagya ill fortune, durahankriti an evil pride, durvachas bad speech. The same device appeared in verse nineteen, where durasha, duradhipa, duranta, durita and duhkha described the round of worldly life. There they held him fast. Here the same words name what has moved away.
‘Duraksharani’ can be taken in two ways. One is bad speech that falls on the ear, an ill-omened word, an abuse. The other rests on akshara as a written letter, and so means the ill writing of destiny on the forehead. Since verse fifteen spoke of erasing the writing of fate, many readers find support for the second sense too. Held together, the two make the list complete: the words we speak, the fortune that falls to us, and the conceit within.
One small grammatical point. ‘Durikritani’ is a neuter plural and agrees with all the words that follow it together. There is no other verb in that line, so the reader must supply for himself that these things have been put at a distance. Nor does the verse say who put them there, though the third quarter hints at the reason: the drinking of the essence of Shiva’s story.
The image of drinking is not new to this work. Its very title speaks of a wave of bliss. What is drunk here is the essence of Shiva’s story, and ‘nitaram’ does not mean a sip for tasting but a drinking until the thirst is done. The shape of the request deserves notice as well. He does not ask for a hand to be held out, but to be lifted by a look. Kataksha is the glance from the corner of the eye, and sat means good or true. The plural tells us these are not one look but looks that fall again and again.
As to the metre: each quarter has fourteen syllables, of which the third, fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, tenth and twelfth are light and the rest heavy. That is the metre called vasantatilaka, which also carries several of the verses between seventy one and seventy five.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
On the day a debt of many years is cleared, a stamp goes on to a sheet of paper. The amount was known from the start and no new sum has been worked out. What changes is the walk out of the office.
The verse does the same thing, naming one by one the weights that have come off. Something else may be noticed as well: even after the debt is cleared the poet does not stop asking, and says, lift me up. When one weight comes off us, we do not feel either that everything is now finished.
ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ತಪ್ಪೋ ಬೇರೆ ಪಾಠಾಂತರವೋ ಕಂಡಿತೇ? ನಮಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿ.
